The RE future: RE and the new English Baccalaureate

Since last year British government made a big transformation in Education introducing the English Baccalaureate. It comprises the following subjects: English, Maths, Science and one subject from Humanities  (History or Geography) and a modern or ancient foreign language. Curiously though RE is recognized by the Government as important subject - its status stays intact as a "compulsory" RE, however, remains outside of this "Baccalaureate status". Since the school's league tables are going to be measured by the achievement on this Baccalaureate there are fears subjects outside of this "baccalaureate status" are going to be devalued including RE.
